ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
The successful completion of a dissertation is a daunting task in itself. Whatever merit the
research work has gained owes gratitude to all the inspirations and supports I have got. My
ageing parents who have tall dreams about my life and career, and keep track of me
everyday since I left home are my foundation. I am always in debt to the love of my
brothers and Bishnu Vauju.
I owe my sincere gratitude to my pathfinder, the lecturer of Anthropology at the Central
Department of Sociology and Anthropology, Mr.Suresh Dhakal for his unfailing guidance
as my supervisor. I could integrate my research on Shifting Cultivation with the
International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), travel to the
hinterlands of Central and Eastern Nepal for primary data collection due to his kind
cooperation.
I am very thankful to the Head of Department and external evaluator of my thesis Prof. Dr.
Om Gurung for approving my thesis and providing further suggestions to improve my
thesis.
Equal thanks are due to Mr. Damber Chemjhong, the faculty of Anthropology at the
Central Department of Sociology and Anthropology, who inspired me to continue my
research in the absence of my supervisor. He availed me with the reading materials that
helped me to delve deeper in my research. Suresh sir and Damber sir are my pillars.
I am thankful to Dr. Binod Pokharel, Reader of the Central Department of Sociology and
Anthropology, Tribhuvan University for his encouragement from the very early phase.
Aait singh Chepang, secretary of Nepal Chepang (NCA) Association, with whom I visited
Chepang villages and knew about Chepang culture and Kamal Prasad Aryal of ICIMOD
who provided me with reading materials and suggestions for my thesis are also thankful
together with all the respondents.
NCA provided me financial and logistic supports. My classmates Pauline Limbu and Mitra
Shrestha and my friend Ramesh Poudel kept incessant concern on my research. How could
I forget them!
Chitra Chepang of Gorkha, Akendra Chepang of Dhading, Nisha Chepang of Chitwan,
Govind Rai of Sankhuwasabha also deserve thanks for their company in the fields. My
classmates Guman Khatri, Nirmala Sharma, Seela Sen also deserve thanks from my side.
Meg E. Inflorati, Ph.D. and Bishnu Devkota afforded their suggestions and editing
assistance respectively. Thanks to them and all my well-wishers
Dhruba Prasad Sharma
